Bike MS:  Cactus & Crude Ride 2010

July 17-18, 2010

 

Join us for a ride that you will never forget.  Enjoy the West Texas scenery and the one of a kind camaraderie.  On day 1, the ride will start in Midland and take you 75 miles through Garden City to Big Spring where you will overnight.  Day 2 will take you another 75 miles from Big Spring through Gail and on to the final destination in Post.  This thrilling weekend ride is fully supported with SAG vehicles, route mechanics, massage therapists, festive rest areas, plenty of food, and lots of wonderful volunteers.  You don’t want to miss it!

  • 75.6 miles (Saturday)
  • 75.2 miles (Sunday)

*For your safety we will sweep the route for all remaining riders each day by 3:00 PM

Start Locations:

  • Saturday, July 17:  Halliburton Offices, 4000 N. Big Spring Street, Midland, TX 7:00 AM
  • Sunday, July 18:  Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID), Big Spring TX 7:00 AM

Finish Line Locations:

  • Saturday, July 17:  Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID), Big Spring TX
  • Sunday, July 18:  Post City Park, Highway 84 and E. 3rd Street, Post, TX

Overnight Accommodations:  Each cyclist is responsible for making arrangements as needed.  Listed below are hotels available in Midland and Big Spring.  The dorm rooms at SWCID in Big Spring are only available on Saturday night and are limited to cyclists and official event volunteers.

  • Friday Night:  Midland, TX
  • Saturday Night:  Big Spring, TX
    • Dorm at SWCID:  There is limited room available at the dorm.  Reservations must be booked through the NMSS office.  Please call (806) 687-4816 to reserve your bed.  The rooms are double occupancy and share a bathroom with an adjoining room.  You must bring appropriate bedding (sheets, blanket, pillow, etc.), towel, and any other necessities.  The fee is $10 per person.  This can be paid in advance or upon arrival at the SWCID campus.  If you have reserved a dorm room, you will pick-up your key in the lobby of the dorm after you finish the first leg of the ride in Big Spring.  No alcoholic beverages are allowed at SWCID since it is a college campus.  Please follow this rule.  Please be reminded that there is limited room available at this facility.  Make your reservations as soon as possible.
    • Camping at SWCID:  Cyclists will be allowed to camp at the SWCID campus.  If you are interested in doing this, please call the NMSS office for details.  We need to know who is planning on doing this so please let us know.  There will be a designated area.
    • Big Spring Area Hotels

Transportation:  A bus will be available to transport cyclists from Post back to Midland at the conclusion of the ride.  There is no charge for the bus, but each cyclist will need to contact the NMSS office to make a reservation.  Please call (806) 687-4816.  The bus will leave Post after the last rider has crossed the finish line.  There will also be a moving truck available to carefully transport bikes back to Midland.  The bus and the moving van will return to the starting line at 4000 N. Big Spring in Midland.

Luggage:  Please limit your luggage to two pieces.  You will be given luggage tags at check-in/packet pick-up.  Please place these on your bags.  On Saturday morning, there will be a rental truck at the starting line.  Please drop-off your bag to be transported to Big Spring.  The bags will be unloaded in Big Spring and left in the dorm lobby for you to pick-up.  Please refer to your luggage tags to make certain you get the right bags.  On Sunday morning, please drop-off your luggage at the rental truck outside of the dorm.  It will be transported to the Post finish line for you to pick-up after the ride.  If you are riding the bus back to Midland, be sure to put your luggage on the bus and your bike at the moving van.

Meals:  All meals listed below will be provided at no charge for cyclists and official event volunteers.  If you have family members or additional people that would like to join us for meals, please have them call the NMSS office to make arrangements.  Please call (806) 687-4816.  They will be able to take part in the meals for a minimal charge.  We encourage you to bring your family to the event, but we need to make the appropriate arrangements to help us in our planning.  This will help ensure that there is enough food for all people attending the event.  All meals will have a vegetarian option.

  • Saturday Meals
    • Lunch:  We will serve Fajitas at the finish line in Big Spring at the SWCID campus.  These will be served in the cafeteria from 11:00 AM until the last rider is in.  Rest stop 5 will also serve as a lunch rest stop with PB&J sandwiches.
    • Awards Dinner:  Please join us for the awards dinner in the cafeteria at the SWCID campus at 5:30 PM.  We will have someone speak about MS.  There will be a slideshow to take a look at pictures from the first leg of the ride.  We will handout a few awards and several door prizes.  The rest stops on day 1 will hand out tokens to qualify you for door prize drawings, the more rest stop breaks you take, the more chances you have to win!  This will be a spaghetti dinner with salad and bread.
  • Sunday Meals
    • Breakfast:  We will serve breakfast in the SWCID cafeteria from 5:30-6:45 AM. 
    • Lunch:  We will serve lunch at the finish line in Post from 11:00 AM until the last rider is in.  The menu is still being determined.  Rest stop 5 will also serve as a lunch rest stop with PB&J sandwiches.

Please remember to make arrangements for any additional people that would like to take part in any of the meals listed above.

Packet Pick-up:  Stop by to get your rider number, luggage tags, bike number, goody bag and other important last minute ride information.  This is also when you may turn in any fundraising that may still be in your possession.  Please be sure to bring your fundraising envelope that was mailed to you.

  • Late Packet Pick-up Saturday, July 17
    • 6:00-6:45 AM

    • Coffee, juice, and pastries served

 

Pictures:  Team pictures will be taken on Saturday afternoon in Big Spring at the SWCID campus.  If you prefer to have team pictures on Saturday morning before the ride starts, please let us know and we can make arrangements to do it then.

Massage Therapists:  Massage therapists will be available at the finish line on both days of the ride.  Be sure to stop by and get on their schedule as soon as possible.  On Saturday, they will start their last massage at 4:30 PM so they can prepare for day 2 where they will take care of you at the finish line in Post.

Fundraising and Prizes:

  • $250 fundraising minimum
  • Contact our office for any questions or tips regarding fundraising
  • Use your participant center for online fundraising available through our website http://www.mswesttexas.com/ this is a very easy and efficient way to do your fundraising!
  • The Complete prize list is available on the website.  The bike MS 2009 t-shirt is awarded to anyone that raises the $250 minimum pledge.  There are many other great prizes available!
